How to start strength training as a beginner in Nottingham
More and more people are talking about the benefits of strength training, and for good reason.
Whether you’ve heard it on a podcast, seen it pop up on social media or had your GP recommend it or even a friend or family member, strength training is one of the best things you can do for your long term health.
But knowing you should start and actually knowing how to start are two very different things.
If you’ve never stepped foot in a gym before, it can feel overwhelming. Which exercises should you do? How heavy should you lift? What if you get it wrong?
At Principal Athletic, we believe strength training doesn’t need to be complicated. Learn the fundamentals, follow a structured programme and stay consistent. That’s what delivers results.
Strength training is about far more than lifting heavy weights.
Done well, it helps you build muscle, move better, improve confidence and become stronger for everyday life. Whether that’s carrying the shopping, playing with your children or simply feeling more capable, strength training has benefits that extend well beyond the gym.
It also provides the foundation for better fitness, making almost every other type of training easier and more effective.
Is strength training boring?
A lot of people assume it is.
The thought of walking into a gym, working through a programme on your own and not really knowing what you’re doing can sound anything from intimidating to repetitive.
The reality is often very different.
Once you start learning new movements, improving your technique and seeing yourself get stronger, training becomes incredibly rewarding. Adding another 2.5kg to the bar, completing an extra rep or achieving a lift you never thought possible gives you something tangible to work towards.
One thing we’ve found at Principal Athletic is that strength training becomes even more enjoyable when you do it alongside other people.
Our Principal Hypertrophy Training (PHT for short!) programme combines progressive strength training with a coached group environment. Everyone follows the same structured programme at their own level, creating an atmosphere that’s supportive, motivating and far more enjoyable than training alone.
Start with the right weight
One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is trying to lift too much too soon.
The right weight is one that challenges you while allowing you to move well and maintain good technique. As your confidence and strength improve, the weight will naturally increase too.
At Principal Athletic, our coaches are there every session to help you learn the movements, improve your technique and build confidence from day one. We focus on moving well first, then adding weight over time.
Follow a programme, not random workouts
If there’s one piece of advice we’d give every beginner, it’s this: follow a programme.
Jumping between machines, copying workouts from social media or doing something completely different every session makes it difficult to know whether you’re actually improving.
At Principal Athletic, every strength session follows our Principal Hypertrophy programme, written entirely in-house by our head coach.
The programme is progressive, meaning each training block builds on the last. Exercises are repeated with purpose, weights gradually increase as you get stronger and every session contributes to your long-term progress.
The programme is also fully scalable, so whether it’s your first time picking up a dumbbell or you’ve trained for years, your coach will adapt the session to your current ability.
How often do you need to train to gain muscle?
One of the biggest myths in fitness is that you need to train every day to see results.
For most people, two or three well-planned strength sessions each week will produce far better results than training every day for a fortnight before burning out.
Consistency is what builds strength.
Having a programme removes the guesswork, while coaching and a supportive community make it much easier to keep showing up, even on the days when motivation is low.
Don’t chase soreness
It’s easy to think you’ve had a great workout because your muscles ache the next day.
In reality, soreness (DOMS) isn’t a reliable measure of progress.
The goal isn’t to finish every session exhausted. The goal is to train well, recover properly and come back ready to improve again.
That’s exactly what progressive programming is designed to do.
