An underrated aspect of training: learning to *love* it
The vast majority of people will tell you they aren’t a “gym person”
But what they usually mean is that they’ve trained alone, in a commercial gym, with no real direction and no one around them who gives a shit.
Based on that experience? Completely understandable.
This is what we do differently at Principal Athletic, our strength & conditioning gym in Nottingham.
Why community matters
There’s something different about going to a gym where you actually know people, where people actually know your name, track your progress, and push you harder than you’d push yourself.
Not all of our members walked through the doors of Principal Athletic loving training. Some come in sceptical, but what kept them consistent wasn’t motivation… it was turning up to a room full of people working just as hard as them, coached through structured sessions, and seeing the numbers move week to week.
We all know the benefits of fitness and strength training: better energy, improved mood, stronger body etc. But community fitness is huge right now because people stick with what they enjoy, and it’s a lot easier to enjoy something when the environment is built around performance and the people around you take it seriously.
At Principal Athletic, “community” isn’t just something we say and talk about, it’s something you see and feel in everything we do, and it means:
➡️ coaches who know your lifts, strengths and gaps
➡️ sessions that are structured, progressive, and actually challenge you
➡️ you’re surrounded by people pushing you to be better who make you actually want to show up
Being part of a group that encourages you makes showing up easier, even on days you ‘don’t feel like it’
Learning to love it
Most people rely on motivation to drag themselves to the gym to do something they vaguely tolerate. And that rarely works long-term.
A big part of making progress is:
*learning to love it*
And that becomes much easier when:
you’re not guessing what to do and you’re following a programme built around progress
the people around you raise your standard
you can actually see progress week to week
That’s exactly what we’ve built at Principal Athletic in Colwick: structured, progressive sessions where people push each other and genuinely enjoy turning up.
The payoff
When you combine structure, progress, and community, something shifts.
You start to love training 🫶
Showing up stops being something you *have* to do and becomes something you *want* to do and something you *get to do* and then, progress follows naturally. Confidence grows, energy increases, performance improves.
